depression and stress

Let Pain Be Your Teacher

With all the news on television, it appears as if there are those who are truly hurting in life. It is for this reason that this article is a must. Many times we want to either numb the pain or get rid of it because it can feel like too much. We are also wired to want to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Although it’s natural to want to avoid pain, pain is also natural and for a good reason. The good reason is that it is feedback.

“What kind of feedback?”, you may wonder. The kind of feedback will depend on where you are in life as well as the kind of pain that you are feeling. There are different degrees of pain and different kinds of pain and in order for you to know which one it is, it is important to go within yourself to find out.

There are emotional and mental pain and then there is physical pain. All these kinds of pain can be associated with the main pain that may have been ignored which is the spiritual pain. With emotional pain, I am referring to any sadness, anxiety, depression, anger, worry, desperation, among other things along these lines that one may feel. I consider them pain because when they are not addressed, they can paralyze and hinder you from living your everyday life.

With mental pain, I’m referring to two things: The first one is the physical symptoms that are associated with the emotional pain that one may feel. The physical symptoms may be consistent headaches, dizziness, or lightheadedness. The second include thoughts and perception. I include thoughts because our thoughts turn into emotions and actions and when the thoughts are not healthy ones, they can create havoc in our life. Our perception shapes the way we view and feel about the things around us and what happens to us and when the perception is not a healthy one, this can be disastrous to one’s well-being.

With physical pain, the list is very long to cover but some of them may include leg problems, high blood pressure due to stress, etc. One thing I must say is that if you feel any physical pain and it is consistent, please seek medical attention. If after seeking medical attention you don’t have any medical condition, then most likely what you’re feeling is psychosomatic symptoms.

Once the pain is there, what can one do about it? It’s easy to want to numb it by either going shopping, eating, drinking, partying, using drugs, among other things that one does to numb the pain. In today’s article, I would like to invite you to allow pain to be your teacher.

How do you allow pain to be your teacher?

emotional pain

  1. Admit to yourself that you feel pain. The first step to anything is to first recognize that something is going on. Notice how I didn’t write that something is wrong. I don’t write this because pain is there to advice you of something so this pain can’t be wrong. It’s just there to give you feedback and feedback is necessary so that changes can be made in order for things to be better. You can’t have a solution or answer without first recognizing and admitting that something is going on.
  2. Accept and embrace the pain. Accept and make friends with your pain. By doing this, you let go of the resistance. Holding on to resistance just make things worse and the pain persists.

How do you become friends with your pain?

mental [ain

Take that moment that you’re feeling that pain to be with yourself. If possible, take 10 minutes to yourself where you will not be disturbed. Take a deep breath in….and then breathe out. Do this a couple more times until you are relaxed. Place your hand on your chest or wherever you feel pain. Close your eyes if you have to but as you have your hand on your chest or wherever the pain is, ask yourself: “what do you want me to know?”; “why do you feel this way?”; “what is it that I am doing or not doing that you want me to be aware of?” Then wait to see if you get an answer. You may not get an answer right away but what you are doing by placing your hand on your chest, or wherever the pain is, and asking yourself these questions is that you are reconnecting with yourself. You are digging within for the answers that you need. You are digging within for your own wisdom.

For instance, if it’s anxiety you are feeling, ask yourself why you are feeling this way. Remind yourself that you are safe and loved. Ask it what it needs you to know and what should you be doing next. What this exercise that I am suggesting does is that it helps you reconnect with yourself because it is that connection with yourself that will lead you to greater well-being.

anxiety

Last year, I had pain in my knees for some odd reason. Turned out I had patella maltracking but I also questioned myself “how I got to that point?”. As I started digging deeper, I realized I had a lot of stress in my life and I was also struggling with some confidence issues in terms of how I was going to move forward.

With this exercise and article, I want to empower you to know that your body was meant to be healed. Your body is the vessel that your soul chose to reside in. Your pain is a reflection of something that is going on within you that calls your attention. So, I would like to encourage you to think about this pain for a minute. What kind of pain is it? Is it a pain of neglect, fear, lack, or worry? Allow the pain to speak to you and advice you as to what you need to be doing. The one thing to understand is that the soul is not separate from the body and anything that the soul is feeling, your body will feel by default.

The pain that you’re feeling will guide you to what area either within yourself or in your life you need to address. Allow that guidance to flow into your life. You have the best guidance system within you. Every time you feel any pain whether that is anxiety, sadness, depression, etc. all that pain is feedback from your soul and you must listen to that.

To end this article, I would like to encourage you to start viewing your pain from a perspective of your soul speaking to you through your vessel which is your body. Allow the pain to be your friend. It’s there to guide you, not hurt you. Place your hand on the area where the pain is and ask it questions. The point is to reconnect with yourself because it is there where your answers reside. You will notice as you do this that the pain tends to lessen and you are subconsciously empowering yourself. This empowerment, without you realizing it at first, will add greatly to your well-being.

Your pain can be a precious jewel if you allow it. Let pain be your teacher and show you what you need to be doing or going in life.

Happy Guide: 6 simple lifestyle changes for health and happiness

There are a thousand problems with just one solution: lifestyle.

Poor lifestyle over years and decades causes all kinds of health problems.

Drugs and other medical interventions aren’t a long-term solution because they don’t address the underlying causes. A lifestyle problem needs a lifestyle solution!

Being happy and healthy is NOT complicated, and health-seekers are being bombarded with unnecessary and misleading information.

It makes me so sad to see people trying all kinds of expensive pills, patches and potions in an attempt to correct symptoms of not living well.

The only true solution is to see the “happy and healthy” finish line clearly and then manage the “change” period carefully, so there’s no resistance and no feeling of denial.

My half-brother Michael Kinnaird went through a living hell for 13 years. Desperate for answers, he searched for a simple guide to being happy and healthy. Every one, without exception, was complex, unclear or incomplete.

To cut a long story short, he ended up writing it himself. It’s a simple one-hour guide that I’m delighted to say is transforming lives. It’s called Happy Guide.

You can read the first chapter “The Happiness Secret” for free, on our home page.

And because The Zeit seems to be very much on our wavelength, we’ve agreed to offer a half-price discount on the eBook version to all its readers, for the next 7 days!

Workout Hair Hacks [Infographic]

Was your 2018 new years resolution focused around fitness? Did you succeed? Less than 50% of people maintain their resolutions just after 2 months. Being too tired, sore, busy or just unmotivated are the main reasons of why these goals commonly fail. Another big reason is because we always seem to have plans or errands to run after our workout and we don’t have time or energy to shower and re-do our hair and look. Stylists say you’re only supposed to wash your hair 2-3 times a week so this doesn’t help with fitting in a workout either. According to the infographic below, preparing your hair pre-workout using the right products and hairstyles can help save time post-workout when transforming your hair back to normal. Read along to find the best style and solutions to slay your workout without ruining your look.

Thanks to these tips from eSalon, an at home hair color company that formulates colors specifically for you, there are no more excuses (at least style excuses) to skip your workout.

Do you have any other tips or use other products for your pre and post-workout hair? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

acupuncture myth and truth

9 Questions about Acupuncture that you keep asking yourself

Acupuncture is a complete system of complementary medicine dating back thousands of years to ancient China.  It is used to alleviate pain and provide relief from a wide range of physical and emotional health issues. Acupuncture involves inserting a fine needle into the skin at specific parts of the body.   Acupuncture is now widely practiced throughout the world, and is seen as a safe and gentle therapy that can be used on its own or as an effective adjunct therapy alongside mainstream medicine.

Barbara Poczyniak - Darou Wellness

I’m Barbara Poczyniak R.Ac, a Registered Acupuncturist practicing in Toronto Canada. I practice Traditional Acupuncture, based on Chinese Medicine.  I work alongside other health practitioners at Darou Wellness Integrative Health, and also at my private practice Vital Bloom Wellness. I love answering questions about Acupuncture, and hope this will be useful for those seeking more information.

1 Acupuncture: Why would anyone want to have hundreds of needles piercing their body?

Unlike what you may have seen in the movies – an acupuncture treatment rarely, if ever, uses hundreds of needles.  The most commonly used treatment styles will utilize anywhere from a couple of needles up to 25 – 30 or so. There are well over 400 standard acupuncture points, but well trained acupuncturists know which ones to use effectively for each individual treatment.  Acupuncture needles may be placed at different points on the body, including: feet, hands, limbs, torso, back, ears, scalp and face. Acupuncture points are chosen based on an acupuncture prescription determined by the goal of each treatment.

2 Why not just use regular medicine; what does acupuncture offer that mainstream medicine doesn’t?

Acupuncture offers effective benefits alongside mainstream medicine. Did you know that many doctors are now recommending acupuncture to their patients as a safe, drug-free method of pain and stress relief?  Studies have shown that acupuncture can help increase blood circulation by enhancing micro-circulation. It can help to relieve muscle tension, as well as help the body reduce inflammation.  Research indicates that acupuncture can help calm and balance the nervous system; as well as help increase the body’s release of endorphins. It can also help reduce the body’s over-production of stress hormones such as cortisol.  Acupuncture is commonly used in conjunction with mainstream medicine, for instance as an aid to faster recovery after surgery or to help deal with unwanted side effects of chemotherapy.

3 I hope I don’t catch anything with those needles. You know we live in the age of Hepatitis and HIV?

Needles are sterile, single use needles that are disposed of as medical waste.  They are not re-usable on other patients, or even for continuing treatments on the same patient.  Registered Acupuncturists are knowledgeable in Clean Needle Technique as part of their extensive training. As licensed professionals they must also follow the safety and sanitation guidelines required by their licensing boards.

4 Why do I need to see a registered acupuncturist when I can go to a Chinese place where they do the same?

Registered Acupuncturist are licensed professionals that are board-certified and have undergone rigorous licensing examinations.  Most Acupuncture education in North America is at least 3 years or longer of full time studies.  Comprehensive education programs include anatomy, physiology and pathology of mainstream medicine as well as the philosophy of Chinese medicine and the acupuncture system.  Due to these strict guidelines in many areas of the USA and Canada, practicing Acupuncture without a license is often no longer permitted.  In fact, it may be that the Chinese place probably has their very own Registered Acupuncturists on staff.

5 Does insurance cover acupuncture expenses (USA and Canada)?

Insurance coverage for Acupuncture can vary widely throughout the USA and Canada.  In general it is not part of government covered health benefits.  In Canada, it is not yet covered under any of the provincial government health plans.  Many third party insurance plans do include Acupuncture treatments by a Registered Acupuncturist.  If in doubt, please check with your insurance company.  If it is not yet included and you would like it to be, contact your insurer to tell them so.  In many cases, private insurance coverage is based on demand and as more clients ask for acupuncture coverage this may change what is included.

6 How long does an acupuncture treatment last and how painful is it?

An acupuncture treatment typically includes a brief consultation as well as the treatment.  If it is a first visit, the consultation will likely be a bit longer in order to cover in-depth health history and treatment goals. Subsequent visits usually include a brief follow-up on how you are feeling since last treatment. Your practitioner will then insert the needles and give you between 20-50 minutes to relax.  On average the time the needles are retained is about 30 minutes.

Acupuncture needles are very thin, about the width of a cat’s whisker.  There may be a slight feeling on the skin during the initial insertion, but it is usually not sharp or very painful.  Once the needles are inserted, the practitioner may briefly manipulate them in order to stimulate the acupuncture point.  It is not uncommon to feel certain sensations such as a slight tingle, heaviness, warmth or even a gentle throbbing at the acupuncture point, or in areas near it. This may be momentary. If acupuncture is done properly by an experienced practitioner it should not be painful and the feeling of discomfort should be at a minimum.

7 What are the side effects?

Negative side effects of acupuncture can sometimes be slight bruising at the site of needling.  This often fades in a few days.  Acupuncturists are very careful not to cause a bruise.  If you are prone to bruising easily, please inform your acupuncturist prior to treatment.  Patients must also inform their practitioner if they are pregnant or actively trying to become pregnant, as there are certain acupuncture points that are not used during pregnancy.

Regardless of the reason for seeking out treatment, one of the best positive side effects of acupuncture is a relaxed, settled feeling – usually after even one treatment.  With ongoing treatments patients usually also report the ‘happy side effects’ of better sleep, improved digestion and a better handle on stress management.

8 What would you say the top 3 illnesses are that acupuncture cures?

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for many physical and emotional conditions, but it cannot claim to cure any particular disease.  Acupuncture can work to relieve the symptoms of a condition but also (and perhaps more importantly) it addresses the root of the imbalance that is causing the condition to happen in the first place. Essentially it looks to treat “the root” of what is causing an illness.  For this reason it can often work very well for conditions that mainstream medicine does not have an easy way to treat effectively.  Unlike many medications, it does not come with any major side effects.  It also views and treats the body as a whole system, rather than just as a set of parts and symptoms.

9 Please debunk 3 myths about acupuncture.

Myth: Acupuncture is a placebo.

Myth Debunked: Acupuncture has not yet been explained completely – therefore many skeptics claim it can only be a placebo.  Its important to know that animals have long been successfully treated with acupuncture. Unlike humans, they are not aware of placebos.  It is common for prize winning racehorses to get acupuncture from their veterinarians.  Pets and zoo animals can also get acupuncture from vets, often when other treatment options are not working. If acupuncture can work for animals, that can hardly be considered placebo?

Myth: You have to keep coming in “forever”.

Myth Debunked:  Acupuncture does not claim to be an ‘instant fix’.  If an illness or injury is acute it may be resolved in only a few visits. But if a condition is chronic and has been going on for years, it may take months of ongoing acupuncture treatments to see major changes.  Like with anything else it takes some commitment for it to work.  However, once a patient’s condition is stable they do not have to keep coming for treatment.  Usually an occasional ‘maintenance’ visit may be enough, if at all.

Myth: Acupuncture is not real medicine, it is just made up and you can put the needles anywhere.

Myth Debunked:  Acupuncture is based on a very detailed view of how the body, mind and spirit work.

The intricate philosophy of body systems, acupuncture point locations and functions have been studied, tested and discussed over several thousand years.  There is a huge body of literature put together by experts, both ancient and living masters that have documented many thousands of case studies. There are currently numerous ongoing studies on acupuncture and new discoveries are constantly being made to help validate this ancient art and science.

my ambition and dreams

When is it Okay to Give Up on a Dream?

Life has a way of buffeting you about, like you’re on a stormy sea.  And that stormy sea can often disorient you, and knock you way off course, and daze you so much that you don’t even consider getting back on course until the storm eases.

You may have decided in your youth that you were going to be a famous, award-winning actor.  So, to make this dream come true, you attend acting classes, study drama, join a local theatre group, and embrace every opportunity to act that comes your way.  You may head to Los Angeles to break into the film industry like all those Hollywood icons you look up to.

And after several years of going on audition after audition, and not even getting a hint of a part in even the most random, low-budget film, you wonder if perhaps this acting thing might not work out.  You question your ability.  You compare yourself to all the icons whose ranks you desperately desire to join.  And you find that you come up short in almost every way.  You’re no Al Pacino or Meryl Streep.  And in fact, you’ve been told several times on auditions that acting isn’t for you, and that you should probably try something else.  You work in a café, barely make enough money to pay your rent, and all your efforts to become a successful actor have amounted to exactly nothing.

What should you do? Should you give up on this dream and dream another one?

This is the crucial point.  And it is a point which separates those who succeed from those who fail, those who achieve their dreams, and those who don’t.

Rocky Road

I always tell my clients about Sylvester Stallone.  This man knew what he wanted, and he pretty much lost everything in order to get it.  He wanted to be a successful actor just like in our example, but things just weren’t working out for him.  He faced rejection after rejection, was told over and over that he just wasn’t right for the movies, and that he should pick another career!  But he wouldn’t give up.  He was rejected over a thousand times in his quest to succeed, and still he kept going, meeting with virtually no success.

But here’s the kicker in his story.  He did, in fact, shift directions.  He didn’t do it purposely or with any great game plan in mind.  In fact, he was at what he describes as his lowest point, having had to sell his dog, his best friend, as he could no longer afford to feed him.

It was at this point when he saw a fight between Muhammad Ali, and the unknown Chuck Wepner.  Wepner actually went the distance with Ali, which was something no one expected.  Seeing this inspired Stallone, who began to write furiously.

Not too long after that, the film script for Rocky was finished.  This, Stallone reasoned, had to be his ticket to success as an actor.  He would play Rocky!  But of course, no one wanted to know.  Everyone he tried to sell the script to thought it was a silly idea, overly sentimental, and that no one would want to watch it.

Undaunted, Stallone continued.  He simply refused to give up.  He finally came across someone who wanted to make the film, but they did not want him to play the part of Rocky as he was not an accomplished actor.  They offered him a large amount of money, which he turned down, despite the fact that he had no money.  Finally, they agreed to his terms, offered him far less money, and made the picture.  The rest is history.

Two crucial things happened in Stallone’s success story, and they are why you know who he is today.  Firstly, he was absolutely unwilling to give up.  Had he given up after 20 or 30 or 300 rejections and listened to the naysayers, he would never have become the star he is today.  Secondly, he changed direction.  Remember, his dream was to become an actor.  But he turned to writing in order to accomplish it.  He was open to the idea, albeit perhaps subconsciously, that his dream could come true via a different route.  Had he not written that script and been so determined to play the part of Rocky, again, he may never have made it as an actor.

beat tokens

Did you know you can get paid for working out?

We work with reputable affiliates to give you tools to achieve your goals. This post includes such links. Full disclosure here

Say what?

Yes, people. Gone are the days when only professional athletes got paid for breaking sweat and improving personal bests.
Here is the plan for you in a nutshell:
BEAT – a network of companies – uses blockchain technology to “incentivize sports, improve health and with this will hopefully increase the number of heart beats every one of us can enjoy in his or her lifetime”.
Basically they act as a “bridge of trust between sportspersons and sponsors”.
Ow woow wooooow – hold on – what’s blockchain?
A blockchain is a digital ledger in which transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are recorded chronologically and publicly. – Wiki
And that’s all I will say about that. Find out more here on this World Economic Forum video:

Umm, you were saying something about getting paid for working out?

Yes, so here is how it works basically:

BEAT – who are they?

BEAT is a network of companies, with a common desire and goal to get you to practice the sports you love even more. You know how they say: ‘ if it sounds too god to be true then it isn’t true’ ? BEAT however, is one of those few exceptions to this rule.

network

What do I need to do?

All you need to do is create an agreement with a sponsor. In that contract you need to define goals that you will reach together. When you reach those goals, you get rewarded by your sponsor through a trusted third party.

1

Ok, sponsors, third parties, me. Who else is in this?

The four entities that are involved are you – the sportsman (you), the trusted third party, the beat  blockchain,  and your sponsor.

Here is BEAT describes all three parties:

“A Trusted Third Party is any legal entity providing infrastructure to capture and verify sports activities reliably and who is willing to extend it in order to fulfill various requirements.”

“A Sportsperson is any private person doing sports. The BEAT Blockchain shall enable this person to store the activity and health data of this person anonymously in an encrypted way in the BEAT Blockchain.”

“A Sponsor is any private, legal or political entity offering targeted rewards for reaching certain health and sport activity goals. “

“The BEAT Blockchain is hosting the activity and health data of the sportsperson, the verification of such data, keeping track of the BEAT Tokens transferred, supporting the offering of BEAT Contracts, their acceptance by the sportsperson as well as the execution of the BEAT Contracts.”

2

Interesting so far? When I heard about this I jumped straight to their site do know more:

https://beat.sportalliance.com/?x=B1qMKuHDz

What if I don’t want to be rewarded in tokens?

So you are not interested in getting BEAT tokens as you are not a cryptocurrency kinda guy. That’s ok!

BEAT clearly states in their white paper: “The sponsor and sportsperson can also agree on a reward outside of the BEAT Blockchain”.

4

So there must be some kind of app thingy to track my activity right?

Not just apps dude! You know what? I am just too excited about BEAT to think straight right now.

Why don’t I just let them tell it to you. Straight from the horse’s mouth:

Now go get it:
