7 Fresh Summer Juice Recipes From the East African Islands and Their Benefits

So summer is here and one of the most important things we need during the long summer days is to stay hydrated. But there are places in the world where summer never goes away. Take my home town Mombasa for instance: the temperature is above 95 degrees most of the year.

I am about to give you fresh drink recipes and their benefits that you have not read in any blog before. These are healthy drinks that are easy to make and are so soothing that you are going to thank me for this.

Remember, where I come from food is mostly prepared by instinct and no exact measures are available a lot of the time. So please add ingredients based on your own taste and use HONEY or any other healthy sweetener to your taste.

The best way is to use a juicer, if you don’t have one just blend and use a sieve.

How to Make Michele the Trainer’s Fat Free Fusion Balsamic Vinaigrette

Vegetable salad

Love creamy salad dressing?  Are you trying to lose weight? If so I recommend low fat and only recommend good fats from whole foods.  Here is a way to make a delicious rich creamy salad dressing with no fat. If you want quality fats, add some organic avocado or organic olives into your salad!

I created this recipe because I had some excellent organic white mushrooms and organic baby carrots that were begging for an Italian salad dressing but I didn’t want oil.  If you want to indulge, I have an excellent Creamy Italian Salad Dressing recipe that boasts a top quality olive oil, but normally I avoid oils.  This new recipe was perfect.  My salad had the mushrooms, carrots, chopped romaine hearts, Persian cucumbers, and organic green olives, but you can add tomatoes or any other great salad veggie too. Apple Kale Pomegranate Salad

My Initial Post

You know when the-zeit asked me to make another guest appearance on their blog I was elated. Some of you who are reading this post might be familiar with my debut feature entitled ‘Maintain positive health in the winter – Let’s do it!’ the response from the-zeit’s readers was simply outstanding. I couldn’t believe so many people enjoyed reading my post and could resonate with it. I love helping people, seriously, I really do, so my objective was to reach out to as many people as possible and hopefully make a positive impact.

The Follow up!

That post was a tough act to follow; I thought about composing another health article but had a change of heart at the last minute. Since I LOVE to cook and know so many people enjoy eating I decided to treat you all to this Apple kale pomegranate salad – sorry the title is such a mouthful (no pun intended hehe). I believe this recipe is very timely with so many people in what I like to call ‘health mode’. If you’re one of those people, who have made a New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier, then yes I’m referring to you. Salads are very dear to my heart because they’re extremely light, low in fat, carbohydrates and an excellent choice to aid weight loss.

Hassle Free Salad

This salad is an assortment of kale, apple, pomegranate seeds and cashews – very simple yet tasty. I know we love to eat but most of us hate how time consuming cooking is and that’s another reason why I created this recipe. It’s one I eat often myself and kept in mind how convenient it was to make when introducing it to the wider audience. Continue reading

3 Healthy Foods That Could Kill You

Rotten fruits

Healthy vegetables and fruits contain large amounts of natural chemicals that can kill you. Photo by Grant Cochrane

We all want to eat healthy; well most of us anyway. Healthy snacks, healthy recipes, organic food, raw veg diets, and many other buzz words are being thrown out there. We read blogs, listen to Dr.Oz, and try to do the right thing. However some of the healthy food choices we make have deadly side effects that no one is really talking about.

Potatoes

Yes potatoes will kill you if they have turned green. When potatoes turn green it is a sign that the potatoes have been exposed to too much light and a natural glycoalkaloid known as solanine has occurred.
Eating a potato that has turned green may cause the following problems:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • gastrointestinal disorders

If you notice a slight green layer just under the potato skin, cut away the green portions of the potato before cooking and eating. The rest of the potato is safe to eat.

Always store your potatoes in a dark, cool, dry place to prevent them from turning green. Continue reading
