The 1 Piece of Advice You Need to Succeed in 2018 and Beyond

Raring to go

It’s a new year, a new beginning and you are raring to go. Will you still be as enthusiastic in a few months? Do you know what it takes to get to the finish line? Image by stockimages

It is 2018 Now What?

You have been warming up and getting ready to get on the stage to perform. In your mind you have imagined over and over about how you are going to perform on stage. How you will entertain the audience and how you will make them laugh and intrigue them.

Imagine that all the preparation is over and now you are on stage. Now is the time that you need to perform. Now is the time that you need to stick to your guns and remove any self-doubt. Whatever you planned to do on stage do it without hesitation and don’t back down.

I am sure many of us have already read a few articles recently on how to make resolutions for the new year and how to keep them. We read these articles almost every year around December all the way through February.

This is not one of those articles! I am here to give you a step-by-step guide that will make everything you touch turn into gold. I am here to tell you about the one thing that will make you a winner regardless of your situation.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you PERSEVERANCE! In a recent study, it has been shown that IQ is not what makes students in grade school successful. Neither was hard work alone good enough to make you successful in your career. The research studied different groups of people over many years: doctors, college students, engineers, athletes, etc. It turns out that the common denominator in all those who were successful among their peers was perseverance.

Angela Lee Duckworth is a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania. She studies intangible concepts such as self-control and grit to determine how they might predict both academic and professional success.

Check out her awesome video below where she talks about combining your passion with perseverance to succeed in just about anything you put your mind into.

The key to success? Grit

What is Perseverance?

Perseverance is having steadfastness in doing what you need to do in order to achieve your goals despite trials and turbulence along the way that threaten those goals.

Failure is Temporary

Angele Lee Duckworth

“Grit is sticking with your future — day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years — and working really hard to make that future a reality.”

Failure is temporary but quitting is what makes it permanent. One of the major components of perseverance – as Angela Lee Duckworth mentioned – is knowing that failure is only temporary.

As the most legendary fictional character I know –Rocky- says in the video below: “It isn’t about how hard you can hit, but about how hard you get hit and keep moving forward”.

Priceless Advice on Perseverance

How to Persevere

Now that I have told you where to find the “goose that lays golden eggs” it is only fair that I tell you how to make it lay those golden eggs. Below is a 2-step guide to achieving perseverance.

Step 1: Strengthen Your Resolve

Find out what you really want and plan for it properly. There is nothing worse than making yourself believe that you want something when actually it is what your environment and people around you made you think it’s what you want.

So write it down and make a plan on how you are going to achieve it. Remember that a goal without a plan is just a wish. Make a schedule and give yourself a deadline.

While doing so make sure that you have removed every ounce of self-doubt and just be confident in your ability to achieve what you want. Whatever you do, make sure that you are not comparing yourself to others; there is nothing more demoralizing than comparing yourself to others.

Most importantly when it comes to people, make sure you hang out with like-minded people. Avoid negative people who will try to bring you down. Some of those people may be your so-called friends so be ready to ditch them.

Step 2: Deal with Obstacles

This is the part that Rocky talks about when he says that it’s about getting hit and still continuing to move forward. Now you don’t want to move forward into a barrage of punches. You need to have a method to your madness.

Face whatever problem you may encounter head-on! Many people find it easier to ignore the problem or underestimate it as a way of dealing with it. However, it is much better to see the problem for what it is and take it by the horn. This will help you find the proper solution faster and get you on your way again to achieving what you set out to do.

Just make sure that you take the time to weigh your options carefully. There is always more than one way to skin a cat and when you decide to fix a problem you are facing, it better be the right fix.

One thing I have learnt in my life is that advice is for free and it saves you time. People who have been through what you are going through can give you valuable advice on how to fix your problem. That way you avoid making the same mistakes they made which would make your problem worse.

Deal with Obstacles Efficiently

You do not need to be the smartest person in the world. You do not need to be the most privileged person in the world. You should never let where you started determine where you end up in life. Today you can achieve your goals regardless of your circumstances. All you need is perseverance! All you need is perseverance! All you need is perseverance!

I wrote this article because it is the start of the year and many people are looking for a fresh start. However, it does not matter if it is July or October, the minute you finish reading this and feel motivated, please take action right away. Don’t wait for tomorrow for the enemy of progress is procrastination.

Have I motivated you? I would really love to read your comments below so please do comment.

  1. Really like the TED talk. Short and effective. I particularly found fascinating the information that kids who find out that their learning capacity isn’t fixed – that they can improve – actually do better.

  2. Reblogged this on Back in the Swirl: Meniere's , Migraines, Depression and commented:
Without perseverance all our efforts are in vain.
In the face of great obstacles and challenges, do not quit!
Get yourself up, move on and forward.
    Keep pushing, Keep pressing on.
Keep searching for answers, for new ways to circumvent an issue and obtain the results you need.

Research, inquiry, knock on several doors. Don’t allow that inner fire to extinguish.
Don’t let that prayer to vanish.

Perseverance, will eventually delivers its reward.

  3. This is spot on! Exactly my thinking for this year.
It was always tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow with me. Or I would go through phases and then stop and think oh well that’s it then – but the key is not stopping! Or if I do stop, start again/continue where I left off. I’m determined to change things around this year, even if it’s just one thing at a time.

Thank you for sharing this article and including the videos which are really helpful!

  4. Yeah okay, but what if I’m not Rocky? What If I’m not even Apollo or Clubber or Drago? What if I’m not and never could have been a ‘Contender Charlie’? What if I’m a ‘bum’? What if I’m just a guy who is going to get punched and punched and knocked down for the rest of my fighting career and never win? Perseverance is okay and I agree with the ‘grit’ thing, but what if I’m one of the ‘never will be’ people, no matter how much ‘grit’ I’ve got? You see there have to be losers in life, if there are winners, and what if I’m one of them?

    • That’s the problem right there, self-doubt, plus why do you have to compare yourself to others. Define what success is for yourself and keep on going, as I said in the post you don’t wanna be moving forward into a barrage of punches. Have a plan and be precise in what you do. Perseverance does not mean blind-persistence. It means learning from your mistakes and doing better the next time. Life is not about winning and losing in comparison to one another, it’s about being the best version of yourself.

  5. Very true article. Thanks for sharing. I think many people (speaking for myself aswel) struggle with finding out what they really want, like and love. We are living in a worldly system, which makes us create a certain image of how the ‘perfect’ future is: studying hard, get good grades, working for the rest of your life, getting money, die..
We first have to break from this image to come to our selfs, and really see what we truly want and achieve it.

    • Well said! I also believe that we all need to re-define what success is to us. That will make it easier to achieve it. If we let the world tell us what success means, we will not progress because we will be comparing ourselves to people who fit a certain criteria or profile that may not be achievable. And even if we did achieve we may not be happy with it. What makes man more miserable than comparing himself to someone else?

  6. Thanks for this! It helped me to figure out what I really want. I want to feel healthy, vibrant, and whole. I want to stop feeling broken, damaged, and tired. I am now going to look at my daily decisions and make the choices that take down the path I really want to head.

    • Thank you, it always means a lot to us when one of our readers says that our blog post has helped them. Keep working for you dreams and you will be rewarded.

  7. I just love the truth in this. I have perseverance and apply this to my life and people wonder what the secret is when there is not one. Thanks for sharing =)
